METROPOLIS, IL (KFVS) -

The Cook Coal Company in Metropolis, Illinois will be facing some layoffs.

According to Melissa McHenry with American Electric Power, they will reduce the workforce by 22 positions in the next couple of months. That is almost one-third of the workforce.

Currently there are 69 employees at the facility.

McHenry said the amount of coal going through the terminal is less compared to recent years.

She said the demand is not as much due to the increased use of natural gas.

According to McHenry, the cuts will take place by November 3.

She said there are no plans to close the facility in the future.

The company transfers coal from the railroad to barges.

It is located on U.S. 45 in Metropolis.
