Police: Woman left 3 young children in hot car while allegedly shoplifting

A Steele, Missouri woman was arrested after police say she left three children in a hot car.

Coisha McVay, 23, was charged with three counts of first degree endangering the welfare of a child.

According to Police Chief Billy Joe Stanfield, at around 3 p.m. on Thursday, August 25 and responded to the Dollar General parking lot for a report of children being inside a parked vehicle.

Stanfield said officers found three small children unattended inside the vehicle. He said the children were wet with sweat and the vehicle windows were slightly cracked open.

Officers quickly removed the children from the truck and put them inside an air conditioned patrol car.

Chief Stanfield said they were all under the age of five years old.

According to court documents, a temperature reading inside the truck was taken at 122 degrees. The outside temperature at the time was 90 degrees with a heat index of 101 degrees.

Officers went inside the store to try to find the driver of the truck and found 23-year-old Coisha McVay.

According to police, at the time of her arrest, she was allegedly shoplifting from the store.

She was arrested and taken to the Pemiscot County Jail. A report was filed with the Pemiscot County prosecuting attorney and a warrant was issued, charging her with three counts of first degree endangering the welfare of a child.

Her bond was set at $35,000.
