CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Some people in Cape Girardeau spent the day on Thursday, August 25 learning how to respond to a disaster.

It was part of a course being offered by the Cape Girardeau Fire Department and other first responders.

The Community Emergency Response Team training course are designed to help you know what to do in the event of an emergency.

"We feel training is invaluable because if I trained I can find somebody else to help me and I can tell him what to do as we're doing things safely, the right way, to keep others from getting hurt," said Jim Watkins, Region E CERT coordinator. "That's where the CERT program came from, is to teach others how to rescue people they are around already without doing harm to yourself, the rescuer."

The training is a 20-hour course that focuses on search and rescue operations, team organization and other emergency skills.

The next session begins on September 27.
