College students hoping to be teachers one day, donate school supplies to elementary schools.

The Future Teachers Organization at Shawnee Community College collected enough supplies to fill 43 backpacks with school supplies.

The group collected and gave out over $1,300 dollars in donations.

Ruth Smith, SCC Education instructor and program coordinator said "The annual School Supply Drive is a benefit to both the SCC students and the public school children. The future teachers learn to support local schools through community service, while the school-age children receive tools that allow them to be ready to learn."

The Pack-A-Backpack Challenge isn’t over.

You can still submit donations by sending them to Ruth Smith, at Shawnee Community College, 8364 Shawnee College Road, Ullin, IL 62292.

Checks can be made payable to Shawnee Community College, and they will be credited to the organization's account.

For more information, contact Ruth Smith at 618-634-3347 or you can send Smith an email.
