A former church that was turned into a school in rural Madison County, Missouri caught on fire Wednesday morning.

According to the Fredericktown Fire Department, crews cleared the scene around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

As of Thursday, they still do not know the cause of the fire. The state fire marshal is still investigating.

According to the Madison County Sheriff's Department, the fire started at a school associated with Faith Foundation Children's Home on County Road 257 around 6:15 a.m.

One firefighter went to the hospital for heat exhaustion and 11 other firefighters were treated at the scene.

About 80 students were evacuated and all the kids were accounted for.

The sheriff's department said no kids were inside of the building at the time the fire started.

According to the school district, the fire destroyed everything.

The pastor and CEO of Faith Foundation said it a sad say for the 16-year-old school.

"It's, you know, it hurts," Pastor Buck Proffer said. "A lot of memories. It's just a thing, and I'm thankful no one was injured."

A teacher said they have to plan the whole school year over again and will need donations, especially reading books because they lost their whole library.

At 7:50 a.m. dispatch requested backup from Perry County, Fredericktown City, and St. Francois County.

At one time, at least five departments were on the scene battling smoke inside the building. Firefighters had trouble getting inside because of the lack of windows.

An employee at a children's home reported the fire.

The state fire marshal was also on the scene to investigate.

No word yet on how the fire started.

The building was built in the 1980s as a church and later converted into the school.

While currently the Faith Foundation Children's Home, it also acts as a school and students live on site.

They will begin attending classes at their main church.
