CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

On Wednesday, the City of Cape Girardeau and Southeast Missouri State University held a groundbreaking ceremony for the renovation of Capaha Baseball Field at 11:30 a.m. on the field.

The public was invited to attend the ceremony.

There were remarks made from Mayor Harry Rediger, University President Carlos Vargas, Capahas’ longtime coach Jess Bolen, American Legion Baseball Coach Justin Leiser and the new Redhawks Baseball Coach Andy Sawyers.

The field renovation project will include replacing the natural turf with synthetic to help improve field playability, new fencing and a new digital scoreboard in the outfield.

The project is budgeted to cost about $1.8 million for design and construction.

The City and University will split the costs equally.

According to Southeast Missouri State University and the City of Cape Girardeau, the project is expected to be completed by January 2017, just in time for the Redhawks 2017 OVC season.
