MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

A Charleston man is behind bars, accused of hitting a woman with a broom.

According to Mississippi County Sheriff Keith Moore, the woman reported the assault on August 4.

The victim went to the Charleston Police Department initially where she was taken by ambulance for treatment.

Moore said the woman provided medical documentation showing that she suffered from a concussion and had bruises on her legs, arms, chest, and back.

The woman told investigators that Jeffrey Groves hit her with a broom until it broke and cut her elbow.

According to Moore, Groves continued to hit the woman while she was curled up on the kitchen floor.

Groves reportedly told the woman she better be gone when he returned to the home.

He was arrested on a charge of 1st degree domestic assault.

Groves is being held on $50,000 cash or surety bond. He has been ordered to stay away from the victim.
