New Releases: ‘Don’t Breathe,’ ‘Hands of Stone,’ ‘Mechanic: Resurrection’

Three new films are released into the wide domestic box office this weekend on the last weekend of August.

Leading the weekend with the highest theater count is the horror film from writer/director Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead), Don’t Breathe.

Determined to find a better life for her and her sister, Rocky agrees to rob the house of a wealthy blind man with her boyfriend Money and their friend Alex.

When the group discovers that the man is actually a deranged serial killer, they are forced into a mad dash attempt to find an escape from his horrifying house.

Stephen Lang, Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette and Daniel Zovatto star in this tense horror film from some of the most prolific horror film producers whose credits include: Evil Dead, The Grudge, Drag Me to Hell and 30 Days of Night.

Don’t Breathe is rated R for terror, violence, disturbing content and language including sexual references, with a run time of 88 minutes.

A sequel to The Mechanic opens this week with returning lead Jason Statham in Mechanic: Resurrection.

The world’s most dangerous hit man, Arthur Bishop has placed his life of murder firmly into the past until a new foe kidnaps the love of his life.

Forced to take on three impossible assassinations, the most dangerous assassin is forced to face his most dangerous contracts yet.

Jason Statham, Jessica Alba and Tommy Lee Jones star in this action/thriller from German director Dennis Gansel.

Mechanic: Resurrection is rated R for violence throughout and language, with a run time of 99 minutes.

The biopic film following the true story of legendary boxer Roberto Duran and his trainer Ray Arcel is the final wide release of the week with Hands of Stone.

Following the life of Roberto Duran as he makes his professional debut at the age of 16 in 1968, the film follows his rise to prominence as he defeats Sugar Ray Leonard to claim the WBC welterweight title.

Robert De Niro, Edgar Ramirez, Usher Raymond and John Turturro star in this action packed biopic that is based on true events.

Hands of Stone is rated R for language throughout and some sexuality/nudity, with a run time of 105 minutes.

The weekend of September 2 brings two new wide releases.

The Light Between Oceans is the film adaptation of the novel by the same name, from director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines), follows a lighthouse keeper and his wife taking care of an infant they rescued from an adrift rowboat.

From producer Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, The Martian), comes the story of a risk-management consultant forced with the decision to terminate an artificial being’s life that was constructed inside a laboratory in the sci-fi/horror film Morgan.
