CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

A Cape Girardeau man's laptop was stolen - only to quickly be recovered by police with the help of a location tracking app.

Alex Bettinger said he thought he was going to be out thousands of dollars after someone stole his MacBook from his truck parked in his driveway, during the early morning hours of Monday, August 22.

"I noticed that all my car doors were slightly open and I thought 'oh goodness let's see what happens,'" Bettinger said.

Bettinger said it was clear the thief rummaged through the cab and the only thing missing was his Apple laptop.

But thanks to quick thinking and location tracking technology, he now has that computer back.

Bettinger used the Find My iPhone feature on his laptop and iPhone.

The free app, included on most Apple devices, provided him with the computer's exact location after it was taken.

Bettinger said he took a screen grab of the location before the thief apparently wiped the laptop's memory, disabling the tracking feature.

He then notified police who used the location to find and recover the stolen laptop.

"I would definitely think you should have especially if you carry a lot of expensive equipment around," Bettinger said. "It's just almost a necessity now to have GPS in your stuff for how often these types of robberies take place."

Police said they identified a suspect in the case but have not made any arrests at this time.
