Students at Southern Illinois University arrived to class for their first day and already some are having some financial trouble.

However, they have some help this year.

The SIU Saluki Food Pantry opened their doors for the first time on Monday, August 22.

Several students took advantage and came in to stock up on some needed food items.

Food Pantry Coordinator Sara Sauerhage said these food items should greatly benefit the students that are food insecure.

"When I was a younger student, I felt like what am I supposed to spend my money on," Sauerhage said. "That way they are getting a nutritious meal and can focus more on their school and be productive in that way."

According to a 2013 study among students at Illinois State Universities, 31.6 percent of SIUC students are food insecure. This is higher than the national average that sits at 14 percent.

The SIU Saluki Food Pantry is available for only current SIUC students. Students are allowed to get three days worth of food per month.

The food pantry is located on the lower level of the Student Center and is open on Mondays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and also every Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
