CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

The Carbondale Fire Department hosted its first 'Duck Derby' race at the Carbondale Super Splash Park on Saturday morning.

Carbondale Fire Chief, Ted Lomax says its a fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

"It's $5 each for the duck, you get a number and we have some prizes for the winners," Lomax said. "It's the choice of the firefighters, that's their chosen charity and it's what we raise money for every year, MDA."

Lomax mentioned teaming up with the Park District has been fun.

"It brings entities together here," he said. "It helps us work together for the good of our community."

People throughout the community gathered to see which duck would take first place, including Diane Reader and her grandchildren, Katie and Will Johnson.

"Katie has a duck entered in the duck race," Reader said with excitement. "We saw them set up at Farmer's Market in Carbondale a few weeks ago and they told us about raising money for the different diseases and for the Splash Park so we wanted to be apart of that, didn't we Katie? So we wanted to but a duck!"

"It's a duck race," Katie said. "What's not there to be excited about?"

Lomax says about $5,000 has been raised so far.
