CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

The Carbondale Police Department is now accepting applications for the Citizens Police Academy, open to anyone 18 years of age or older.

It is designed to give citizens a better understanding of the work done by police officers on a daily basis.

The academy will feature two components, each with five sessions: basic and advanced classes; basic classes include low-level patrol tactics and traffic stops, and introduction to investigations and crime scenes.

Meanwhile, advanced classes will feature higher level tactics and traffic stops, a presentation from the Bomb Squad, firearms familiarization, and court perspective.

The advanced classes will begin next year and are open to those who complete the basic classes, the first of which starts at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, September 21.

The Academy is free, but each applicant must undergo a background check.

Those interested can contact Officer Randy Mathis at 475-3200 extension 402, or by emailing him at rmathis@ci.carbondale.il.us.

Applications can be picked up at the Carbondale Police Department, or by finding the form online

They're due back at the carbondale Police Department by September 19.
