MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) -

The City of Mt. Vernon is set to receive nearly $2 million in grants to help complete a years long project.

According to Mayor Mary Jane Chesley, state leaders recently restored two grants that had been put on hold: one for $400,000 and another for $1,500,000.

The $1.5 million will be used to restore the old Illinois National Guard Armory that's been vacant for several years.

The armory, which is located at the corner of Broadway and 7th Street, will be turned into a recreation center. It's a $2 million project.

In 2014, Chesley told us the building would include basketball and volleyball courts, yoga classes, and other exercise activities.

The $400,000 will be used on an outdoor park space at Lincoln Park.
