SOUTHERN ILLINOIS (KFVS) -

Emergency Management Agency officials said when there is almost constant rain, being smart about the routes you take can keep you safe.

East Park Street in Du Quoin had water running over the pavement, creating a dangerous situation for drivers on Monday.

Perry County EMA Coordinator David Searby says it all the time: If you see water, turn around, don't drown and take a safer route.

Even just a little bit of moving water can force a car into a ditch or knock a person's feet out from under them.

Searby said the American Red Cross is on notice.

"If we have to evacuate people there would be, then we would at least have them on standby," he said. "Which is very important, they’re a key player with us so again we’ve been in constant contact with the highway department today keeping track of the roads, what’s the issues with roads we’ve had a few roads that have wash outs.”

Searby said he always stresses safety when it rains continuously.

“So again, there’s another traveling issue, what you might think is down and dry may be a wash out road now," he said. "So our highway department is staying on top of that right now and keeping in eye on it and we’ll stay on top of that as we need to.”

Flooding is still an issue In Wolf Lake and in Union Co. Illinois, as well; many homes were definitely affected by the rain.

One person even said they are going to start pumping water out of their house.
