HERRIN, IL (KFVS) -

On Thursday, August 11 at about 2:30 p.m., the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by Carbondale Police Department in reference to a stolen vehicle.

Carbondale PD said they were tracking a stolen vehicle using a GPS system. As they gave locations of the stolen vehicle it seemed to travel through Hurst and Colp areas and into Herrin.

Officers from several area departments began to search for the vehicle.

The vehicle was located by a deputy in the area of Madison Street and 21st street in Herrin. The driver of the vehicle refused to stop, choosing to flee from the deputy.

The vehicle fled to Herrin Road, then onto Weaver Road at high rates of speed. Near the intersection of Wilson Street and Weaver Road in Herrin, the vehicle failed to navigate a turn and drove through several yards before coming to rest against a culvert. The driver of the vehicle ran away.

An area search that included officers from several departments began.

Residents of the area offered to assist, and one resident volunteered the use of a side-by-side utility vehicle. After a short time the driver was located by a Herrin officer. The driver was taken into custody without further incident.

Officers from the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, Herrin PD, Carterville PD, Illinois State Police, U. S. Fish and Wildlife, and other departments were involved.
