School bus involved in crash in Williamson County

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

One person was taken to the hospital after a crash involving a school bus and a car.

According to Illinois State Police, it happened on Bandyville Road at Travis Court in Herrin just after 1 p.m. Thursday.

The bus was stopped at a rail road crossing when a car failed to stop and rear ended the bus.

The driver of the car, Stacy Meracle of Herrin, was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The bus driver was not hurt.

Meracle was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

Bandyville Road was closed for about 30 minutes.

Troopers say it is especially important right now to remember that kids are going back to school, so there will be more pedestrians and traffic around schools.

Drivers should watch for children walking and riding their bike to school. It's also important to be on the lookout for kids darting out from between parked cars.

According to ISP, drivers should also be on the lookout for slowing and stopped school buses.
