Marion Police Department buys new vest for officers

Some Illinois officers are wearing the latest gear in an effort to keep them even more safe as they patrol the streets.

Officers with the Marion Police Department are now sporting the most up-to-date vest there are for police officers.

The new protection weighs a little lighter and is also thinner than the old ones.

The new vest will be worn over an officer uniform instead of on the inside, making it easier for officers to take it off when they have to do office work.

Chief Dawn Tondini calls the new vest essential to the safety of her officers.

“We want the guys to have the best equipment because we’re concerned about their safety also," Tondini said. "We don’t want them to have expired equipment, all probability they may or may not be good, but we go by what the manufacturer recommends, we replace them every five years.”

Officers said they’re very interested in what future vests will be like.
