MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

A Bertrand man is behind bars for allegedly stealing a lawn mower.

According to Mississippi County Sheriff Keith Moore, the victim called the department to say his stolen lawn mower was parked in front of a home in Mississippi County.

When deputies arrived, they found tire tracks leading to a large pile of dirt covered in grass. That's where they found the stolen John Deer L110.

The owner of the home, Anthony Williams, told investigators the mower belonged to him and showed the deputies a key.

Williams told investigators that he'd bought the mower from a friend, but only knew his friend's first name and that he drove a white truck.

After running the VIN number, deputies confirmed the mower had been reported stolen.

Williams was arrested on a charge of receiving stolen property.

He's being held on $50,000 cash or surety bond.

Sheriff Moore said that residents keeping an eye on their property and keeping a list of the VIN numbers helps recover and easily identify stolen property.
