“Want to try something new?”
It’s a really good question. There is value in a question like this. It can open endless possibilities and opportunities.
If you’re not hearing this question enough, it means you’re not visiting the right places. It means you haven’t met Gary Turner yet.
“Trying something new is what it’s all about. It’s providing something new to guests.”
Turner is the co-owner/operator of The Depot Café in Fredericktown. Opened in February, The Depot Café offers an upscale menu of food with great flavors and generous portions. Not fancy, but eclectic.
Turner said one of the hallmarks of The Depot Café is that everything is made from scratch.
“I get asked all the time if we really make everything here,” Turner said. “Yes, we make everything here.”
Two of the house specialties are blackened catfish tacos and Marquand Country Stew. Each day, there are at least two soups on the menu. Some with a unique twist on the familiar, like a chipotle potato soup or a fire roasted tomato soup.
That concept of a unique twist can also be said for the meatloaf.
“Our Cajun meatloaf is topped with Andouille sausage gravy and is considered a house specialty,” Turner said. “I get people saying it’s the best meatloaf they’ve ever had.”
Specials at The Depot Café include Liver and Onions Wednesdays and Lasagna Thursdays. You can also find a chicken pot pie Sundays or a seafood gumbo Fridays.
Turner also serves his guests a variety of desserts. Any given day, guests might have the chance choose carrot cake, coconut meringue, triple chocolate cheesecake, white wine berry cake, or a lemon cake with lemon curd frosting.
You only need to talk with Turner for a few minutes to feel his passion for food. That passion can be felt throughout his restaurant and what serves his guests.
“If you’re not starting with great ingredients, you will not have a great final product. It doesn’t matter how well you prepare it,” Turner said. We use great ingredients.”
The Depot Café is open this summer Tuesday through Thursday, 11:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 11:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m. and Sunday 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
