The University of Tennessee at Martin Percussion Ensemble won the Percussive Arts Society’s International World Percussion Competition in the university showcase category.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for both the teachers and the students. My students work exceptionally hard, and I demand so much of them,” said Dr. Julie Hill, professor of music and director of the UT Martin percussion program. “For them to be recognized like this on an international stage in front of their peers and percussion heroes from around the world is something none of us will ever forget.”

“Winning this competition is a testament to the work we put in and what we learn here at UT Martin,” said Nathaniel O’Neal, an ensemble member from Smyrna. “We spend hours rehearsing and practicing our parts for just one or two performances a semester. Now, I am able to stand with my fellow percussionists and perform with them on one of the largest stages at PASIC.”

The ensemble will perform at 2 p.m. on Nov. 10, during the Percussive Arts Society International Convention held in Indianapolis, Indiana. A reception for area UT Martin alumni will be held from 9 to 11 p.m.

The performance will feature music from Brazil, Zimbabwe, West Africa and Trinidad, among other countries.

There will be a preview concert November 6 at 7:30 p.m., in the UT Martin Fulton Theatre.

Tickets will be sold at this event to offset convention travel costs.
