Before kids head back to the classroom, teachers spend a lot of time getting their classrooms ready.

For a new teacher, it can be overwhelming.

Nikki Layton just landed her first teaching job at Perryville Elementary School.

She said when she walked into her classroom for the first time, it was a blank canvas and it’s been a lot of work preparing for the upcoming school year.

“I thought seriously of just bringing an air mattress and camping out until the first day because there's so much to do,” Layton said. “There’s been lots of laminating and cutting.”

She said the work just keeps stacking up.

Lesley Curre said she'll never forget her first teaching job...

“I got put into a first grade classroom mid-October,” Curre said. “So I just kind of stepped in and muddled my way through the first year. And then year after year I just learned better ways of doing things and being more organized.”

Leykurre has been teaching for 28 years and has the prep work down.

She knows her stuff and doesn't mind sharing.

“I copy a lot of papers during the summer time because you don't have to wait in line,” Curre said. “The copier works and right now I have a lot of my papers copied for like the first two months of school.”

As for Layton, she said she will take all the advice she can get and expects the first day to be full of surprises.

“One of the most important parts of teaching is just you have to go with the flow and you don't always know what to expect,” Layton said.

Perryville Elementary is set to start school Wednesday, August 17.
