Despite being panned by film critics, "Suicide Squad" broke the box office record for the month of August.

In The Wall Street Journal, Joe Morgenstern wrote the film is "ugly trash" that "amounts to an all-out attack on the whole idea of entertainment." But movie goers turned out in droves to see the latest theatrical installment of the DC Universe.

"Suicide Squad" pulled in more than $135 million dollars in the United States and topped $267 million worldwide, making it the largest opening weekend for a film in the month of August, according to an official with Warner Bros. Pictures.

"We knew there was great anticipation for this film, but we are thrilled to see that translated to such a spectacular result," Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President, Worldwide Distribution, Warner Bros, said in a statement. "And with key territories like Japan, Germany and Italy yet to open, we feel confident that the Squad will continue to entertain audiences everywhere for the foreseeable future."
