According to Pope County Sheriff Jerry Suits, a man is dead after he drowned in a lake in Pope County on Saturday.
Suits said a 20 year old Tennessee man along with his two friends were camping at the Garden of the Gods when they decided to take a swim at the One Horse Gap Lake Saturday afternoon.
Shortly thereafter, Suits said the 20 year old man, who "wasn't a very good swimmer", was playing in the water and allegedly had some trouble.
"He was hollering for help," Suits said. "His friends came over and they were too late."
A 911 call was made at 1:52 p.m. and first responders, Pope County Sheriff deputies, along with the Pope County Fire Department responded to the scene.
"What started out to be a good day (for this man), ended up in tragedy," Suits added.
Suits said he believes the drowning was accidental.
