CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

Mark your calendars - twice.

August 21, 2017 is the date to remember if you want to witness the United States' first total solar eclipse from what is probably the best place to do so locally: Carbondale, Ill.

One entire year earlier on August 21, 2016, Southern Illinois University Carbondale is hosting "Eclipse 2017: One Year Countdown," an event designed to educate the public on the phenomenon, as well as to get them excited for it.

It's free to the public and will include educational videos and a movie, topped off with an invitation to night sky observations.

It all starts Sunday, August 21 at SIUC's Student Center Auditorium at 7 p.m.
