Tax holiday or not, back-to-school season is one of the busiest times of the year for local shops.

So how will you avoid the crowd?

The Target store manager Marcin Krawczyk, in Cape Girardeau, says they'll have extra staff working this weekend to try to make sure lines (NAT) are short at the check-out counter.

"Today we're shopping for school supplies for my two grandsons that go to Perryville School." says Kathy LaRose.

Larose says she and her daughter are on a mission to get what's needed before the first day back to school.

"We both have big lists that we're covering... My daughter Amber and my grandson Kayden are down here and it's pretty crowded... But everything is marked and hopefully we get everything on the list."

Kelly High School sophomore Lynsey Powers and 7th grader Ty Powers are shopping with their grandma, Sue Gleason.

Sue says if they don't get everything on their list today, they plan on getting out in the crowd again this weekend.

"If we don't find what we need we'll be back out."

Lynsey says getting older doesn't help when it comes to going to school.

"[It's] more expensive... I actually have to get a graphing calculator."

And from what Sue remembers, she didn't need much when she went to school.

"I think all we needed was a pencil, a tablet, a new pair of shoes, [and] we were done - but now we need a binder for this and a binder for that."

Kathy says every year the school supply list just gets bigger but they strive to check everything off all at once.

"We're trying to get it all done right now. We don't want to come back out a second time. She already got the backpacks so we're just trying to fill them back up for open house - they can take it all with them."

Bringing an extra person to help you search for supplies isn't a bad idea and coming in with a list of what you need will make things go a little smoother.

The Target store manager says coming right when the store opens or before closing will be your best bet to beat the crowds.
