DEXTER, MO (KFVS) -

A "Back the Blue" event was held at Hickory Log in Dexter on Aug. 4 to show support for local police officers.

The event was organized by Sue Edwards after she says she 'got tired of hearing about officers getting hurt'.

"Every time I turn the news on, I hear another police officer's been shot," Edwards said. "Three or four, or whatever the number is for that day. And I thought, you know what, they do good."

Edwards also said she wished more officers could be honored.

"We couldn't invite all the officers at one time - it would have been virtually impossible, because there has to be some of them out there to protect and serve," Edwards said.

Carbondale Police Chief Sammy Stone spoke about the recent shooting of Carbondale Officer Trey Harris.

"I try to tell people - just because we're in Dexter, Missouri, doesn't mean it can't happen here," Chief Stone said.

Chief Stone said he has received more applications to become an officer.

"Probably a year ago I would have told you we've had trouble filling slots," Chief Stone said. "We have an an influx of of applications."
