CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Historically, voter turnout is low in primary elections, but the SEMO Alliance for Disability Independence is making sure transportation isn't a problem for certain voters getting to the polls.

"We are so proud to be able to offer this service to our consumers and it's a free service to get them to the poll," Diane Mouser said.

Mouser is the transportation coordinator for SADI. When she signs a resident with disabilities up for their services, she makes sure they're registered to vote and have a way to get there.

"A lot of our consumers won't get to the polls unless they have that transportation," she said. "A lot of them don't have that transportation to get there."

So, on election days, Bruce, one of SADI's drivers, goes around Cape Girardeau picking up people and taking them to the polls.

Over the years, this service has helped dozens of people like Chris Bell, a blind musician in Cape Girardeau.

"I'm just really grateful that they put their hand in this today and with anything they do it just a growing number of service that they do for people like us!" Bell said.

Rose Kinder desperately wanted to have her vote counted, but didn't have a way to get to the polls.

"It relieved me because I had a way of going because otherwise, I didn't have a way of going," Kinder said.

Mouser said no matter how big or small the election may be, they will make sure people who want to have their voices heard will have a way.

"They're all important, so they're all important, so yea very important and we intend to continue to offer this free service to them."

We did check around with other transportation companies who decided not to offer free rides for this election.

Stay tuned to KFVS12 for updates on free rides that will be offered for the general election in November.
