CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - "Hey, this is mental. Be sharp right here. I want you to not make any mistakes but don't be afraid to make one and be sure to ask a coach if you have a question, is that clear?"
Arlen Pixley has been around high school athletes for a while.. 20 years this season. He's no stranger to getting them properly motivated.
"You can't take anything for granted, you know, " Pixley said. "What they've done here in the past, is in the past."
Now the head coach of the Cape Central Tigers, Pixley is ready to kick off his season... and he's ready to continue the winning tradition Cape Central is accustomed to.
"The challenge for our seniors and these juniors and the kids underneath them is to try to continue the winning ways that they've had here over the past four years," Pixley said with a grin. "And you know, if we can get those guys striving for that as coaches, I think we've done a pretty good job."
Football practice officially kicked off in Missouri on Monday and with the sound of whistles blowing, the Tigers took the field for their first practice.
Winning is obviously important to Pixley, but what he really gets out of coaching is what he instills in the young men he is put in charge of.
"The game itself, will kind of, take care of itself, if us as coaches, shape these guys," Pixley said.
His players have caught onto his intensity and could not be more ready for the season to start. With a goal in mind.
"The will to win and staying aggressive," senior Blake Harris said. "He wants to win just as bad as we do, he knows where we've been in the past 3 or 4 years and he wants to keep that going."
Cape Central kicks off the season on August 19th at Liberty Mountain View.
