Get fit tip: benefits of foam rolling

Foam rolling can be great for relieving tight muscles.
Fitness trainer Tamatha Crowson says it is both easy and affordable.

“Our muscles are covered by a membrane and that membrane will often get tight,” Crowson said. “And when that happens your muscle can not move in a proper range of motion.  If you’ve ever had a deep tissue massage, you may have noticed that the therapist will take their thumbs and give you a really deep press where the muscle is tight and it’s kind of painful, but after a few minutes it released out and that knot goes away.  Foam rolling is the same concept.”

Crowson says foam rolling is especially beneficial for tight hip and hamstring muscles.

The key to foam rolling is to take it slow.

“Put the foam roller under the top of your hip,” Crowson said. “You’re going to use your body weight and you need to go really, really slow. (rolling the foam roller down your hip and into your hamstring) When you feel a tender spot stop and hold it just for a few seconds. Then continue.”

But if you plan to give foam rolling a try, there are some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind.

“Be patient,” Crowson said.  “Remember that there may be a little bit of discomfort. You just need to push through it.”

Crowson also says to make sure your muscles are warmed up before trying to foam roll, and never doing foam rolling on an injured area or directly on your spine.
