CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Changes to the Cape Girardeau dog park have prompted some pet owners to voice concern.

The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation department recently replaced grass for rocks in a portion of the Large Dog run.

Dog owners like Nicole Hess say the jagged rocks are rough on her Great Dane mix, Harry.

"The rocks do hurt them. I know Harry has had scrapes on his pad,” she said.

It’s a problem that the city says it's well aware of.

Brock Davis, parks division manager, says the rock is in place to address a water run off issue in the dog runs.

"It was washing them out causing gullies and at some points it was washing them out so bad that dogs were escaping under the fence," he said.

In addition to gullies, he says much of the grass in the area replaced by rocks was dead leaving large mud pit any time it rained.

But he says the department has heard the concerns of owners and has a plan in place that should take care of the issue.

"Hopefully within the next few weeks we'll have it all put back with some small pee gravel," Davis said.

That would be a welcome addition for Hess.

"This is the only place we have were he can actually get a full run going," she said.

The city also says it plans to curb the parking area near the runs to redirect water away from the park.
