MOUND CITY, IL (KFVS) -

A man in Mound City is fighting to save a number of historic properties in the town, even though much of the community lies abandoned.

Mound City is only home to around 500 people, but award winning architect Fredrick Medler says all he sees is potential.

"There’s opportunities here for anybody whose got any amount of imagination." Medler said Friday.

Meddler says he spent more than 30 years in St Louis restoring old properties, and when he came to Mound city in 2008, he immediately made plans to move in and start working.

With the help of a man from St Louis, Medler has now purchased 7 properties across town and started restorations.

The most successful project is known as ‘Wall Manor’ one of the last Victorian style mansions left in a once prosperous neighborhood.

"When I came down here it was empty and unoccupied and the owners didn’t know what to do with it." Medler said. "I think you could go anywhere in this country- anywhere in the world for that matter- and make it better for you having been there."

One of the buildings is completed and currently a rental home occupied by an area family He is also working on restoring 2 churches, and a former railroad depot.
