CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Handling trash is a messy job, but industry leaders say Cape Girardeau excels at cleaning up.

The brand new Transfer Station is being recognized for their quality, innovation, and best industry practices.

The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) released their list of 2016 excellence award winners, and Cape made the cut.

Cambridge Companies, who designed the location, received the bronze award for The Public Works facility.

SWANA says their excellence awards program recognizes outstanding solid waste programs and facilities with environmentally and economically sound solid waste management practices.

To win an award you need to show effective technologies and processes in system design and operations, worker and community health and safety, and successful public education and outreach programs.

Furthermore, programs need to demonstrate that they are fiscally and environmentally responsible through their compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations.

The award program honors about 30 programs in 12 categories each year.

Winners will be acknowledged at WASTECON in Indiana next month.
