CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Firefighters from the Cape Girardeau Fire Department rescued two people on a boat on the Mississippi River.

According to the department, crews were called out to the river around 8:30 p.m. on June 10.

The small ski boat had lost power.

When firefighters arrived, the small boat was about 100 yards from being swept into a rock dike. The boat would have likely capsized had it made it to the rock dike, according to the department.

Crews were able to secure the boat, pull it into safer waters, and tow it back to safety.

According to the department, high river levels and barge traffic made the mission much more complicated.

The people on the boat were rescued and the boat secured around 10:00 p.m.

The fire department wants to remind everyone that boats to use safe habits.
