Chinese dictionary is one for the record books

(KFVS) - A Chinese dictionary has sold itself into the record books.

At a ceremony in London, England, Guinness World Records confirmed the Xinhua Dictionary is the "most popular dictionary" and best-selling, regularly updated book in the world.

First published in by Commercial Press 1957, the Xinhua Dictionary is now in its 11th edition.

According to Guinness World Records, as of July 28, 2015, the book has sold 567 million copies worldwide.

"We publish one of the world's most successful reference books and yet we stand in awe before this little dictionary," Rowan Simons, President of Greater China, Guinness World Records said. "To sell over half a billion copies is an amazing achievement and one can easily imagine how important it has been in promoting learning of Chinese language."

Because of its size and easy-to-understand content, the reference book helps foreigners learn more about the Chinese language and culture, according to Guinness World Records.
