CALLOWAY COUNTY, KY (KFVS) -

Nineteen people have been cited after Kentucky State Police troopers received reports of a cockfighting event being held in a building off of Protemus Road in Lynn Grove, Ky. on Saturday, Feb. 6.

When troopers arrived at the scene, they say they found more than 30 dead gamecocks, as well as over 35 live roosters and hens.

According to KSP, troopers found 22 people on scene, 19 of them were cited and released for cruelty to animals in the second degree (a class A misdemeanor).

Additionally, Billy Biggs, 50, of Adolphus, Ky. was arrested on two unrelated outstanding arrest warrants, and also charged with cruelty to animals in the second degree (a class A misdemeanor). Seth Burnett, 23, of Murray, Ky. was arrested for possession of a controlled substance in the first degree (a class D felony), possession of drug paraphernalia (a class A misdemeanor) and was also charged with cruelty to animals in the second degree (a class A misdemeanor).

The owner of the building, Jack Morgan, 53, of Benton, Ky., was arrested for cruelty to animals in the second degree (a class A misdemeanor).

A small camper and box trailer were found at the scene. These trailers were being used to house the live poultry. The camper and box trailer, along with approximately $4,000 in cash, were seized by the authorities.

The poultry have been turned over to the Humane Society of Calloway County.

Neighbors in the area of site say for years they’ve seen cars parked outside a silver shed where they believe the cockfighting took place.

Volunteers at the Calloway County Humane Society say the surviving birds are decent shape considering what they’ve been through.

“I think all of us had the mixed reaction that we are so glad that the police are doing it and what shape are these animals going to be in,” said Kathy Hodge with the humane society. “Of course we were heartbroken to see some were already deceased that was terribly sad,” she said.

They shelter is not equipped to house the birds and volunteers are asking the community for help with supplies.

Due to pending court cases, it’s unclear how long the shelter will have to take care of the birds.

“We just need chicken feed, bedding. Right now, our biggest need and I don’t think I would have anticipated this is dog crates. We need the plastic dog crates,” said Hodge.

The investigation continues by Trooper Aaron Jestes.

KSP was assisted on scene by the Calloway County Sheriff’s Office and the Humane Society of Calloway County.
