CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - When it comes to fitness articles in magazines and online, topics often feature things like "thin thighs in 5 minutes" or "blasting belly fat", but can doing those few exercises really make a difference when it comes to targeting a specific area?
Personal Trainer Tamatha Crowson says no.
"The muscle does not own the fat that's over them," Crowson says. "So doing any kind of exercise that only targets a specific area of your body will not necessary get rid of the fat that's over that area."
She say there are two important factors to consider when it come eliminating fat.
"Number one eat less and number two exercise more," Crowson says.
She adds finding exercises that target multiple muscles at one time can help make the most of a workout.
"You could do leg lifts for 10 years and you're not going to see a lot of difference," Crowson says. "What you really want to do are some lunges or some squats. (with squats) Hinge your hips backwards before you begin. Your weight should be over you heels. In this position you should be able to tap your toes."
Squats will work gluts, quads and hamstrings.
Crowson also suggests forgoing the free weights and try a good ole' fashion push up.
Whether the tradition way, or modified on the knees.
"Again, it's a multi-joint movement," Crowson says. "So we're using the shoulder joint. We're using the elbow as well. This activates a lot of different muscle groups."
Which is going to give you the best burn and most overall results.
