The search for a Missouri couple wanted in a multi-state crime spree, including the Heartland, ended in a deadly shootout in Florida on Friday morning.

A news conference involving multiple agencies was held at the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office in Florida to discuss the details of the incident.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office reports Blake Fitzgerald was killed and his girlfriend, Brittany Harper, suffered a wound to the leg and taken into custody.

The two were wanted for robbery and kidnapping charges in Alabama in a crime spree that began in Tuscaloosa on Sunday morning.

Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan reports Harper is in the process of being charged with home invasion, robbery, false imprisonment and grand theft auto.

Harper suffered injuries to her leg and ankle. She is currently at a local hospital for treatment.

The Escambia County Sheriff's Office says they are investigating the couple for other crimes in northwest Florida.

Authorities are also working across state lines after witness accounts from crimes in Missouri, Alabama, and Georgia.
