Cape Girardeau city council holds meeting in Red Star District
The Cape Girardeau City Council traded in the chamber for the Red Star Baptist Church Activity Center for Monday’s regular meeting.
The change of venue is part of an on-going city program to enlist the community members’ help in improving neighborhoods around Cape Girardeau.
The Red Star District is one of the charter areas for the program.
Residents in the area formed the Red Star Neighborhood Revival, a group open to anyone in the area and focused on doing good for the community.
"Where I live I feel is my neighborhood and I like to contribute any way I can,” group treasurer Jane O’Connell said.
O’Connell says the group has 10-12 active members but they are hoping more people join.

Red Star Revival is working with the city on projects like adding more street lights and improving roadway safety. They are also making suggestions for gentrifying the area with new playgrounds and new signs.

The Red Star District consists of homes and businesses between Big Bend Rd. to Water St. and East Cape Rock Dr. to Second St.
City officials say they hope Red Star Revival is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to neighborhood groups.
They say they'd like to expand the idea out to other areas around town.
