Seventy-five of about 200 employees of a coal mine complex in southern Illinois have lost their jobs.

The workers were employed at Peabody Energy's Wildcat Hills and Cottage Grove mines of the Arclar mining complex just south of Equality in Saline County.

Area resident Judy Kellen said workers showed up to work at roughly 4 a.m. on Friday, January 29, but were immediately sent home.

In a written statement on Friday, Peabody spokeswoman Beth Sutton said the layoffs are, "In response to market conditions and production requirements."

"All impacted employees are being offered severance benefits and will be provided assistance in securing new employment. The company regrets the negative impact this action will have on affected employees, their families and local communities."

In June 2015, roughly 250 corporate and regional employees of Peabody Energy were laid off, and two offices were closed.

The Arclar Complex will remain open.
