PERRYVILLE, MO (KFVS) -

A teacher in Perryville is inspiring people around the Heartland after losing more than half her body weight through diet and exercise alone.

When Laura Ernst started her weight loss journey, she wore a size 32. She now wears a size 4 and has dropped 166 pounds since June 2014.

"These are a size 30 and yeah, I can fit into one leg," Ernst said.

She also participates in The Healthy Weigh program at Saint Francis Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

"Before, I tried all of the other diets and you know, I might have been on it for a year and you lose like thirty-pounds and then you stop loosing weight and all of a sudden you start going back up [in weight] even though you think you're doing everything you're supposed to," Ernst said. "But, this one, it just always kept coming off, and off, and off."

"The things I wanted to do, I just physically couldn't, I couldn't sit on the floor," Ernst said.

Ernst, who is a teacher in Perryville, has shared her journey with her students and on social media in an effort to stay accountable.

"I really had to go back and think, and look at a picture and think, oh wow, that actually is her," one of Ernst's students said.

She walks at least two hours every day and Ernst said she has a new appreciation for life.

People posting on social media call Ernst an inspiration.

She said she is encouraged by the positive response and works to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
