MOUNT VERNON, IL (KFVS) - The Mount Vernon Police Department is reporting that two other suspects have been apprehended in connection to a string of armed robberies.
Steven J. Collier, 26, of Mount Vernon, was taken into custody near his house. After further investigation, police charged Collier with four counts of armed robbery.
Following Collier's arrest, a search warrant was executed for his home, resulting in additional evidence being seized.
Thomas J. Rector, 26, of Mount Vernon, was also taken into custody at the Mount Vernon Police Department. Rector was charged with obstructing justice/providing false information and conspiracy to commit armed robbery.
Police initially made their first arrest on Thursday, Jan. 21 in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
On Thursday at 10:29 a.m., a Mount Vernon police officer pulled over a vehicle at 7th and Barton in Mt Vernon.
The driver of the vehicle, Denzal R. Haynes, 22, was initially taken into custody for providing a false name and driving with a revoked license.
The traffic stop led to a further investigation related to recent armed robberies in Mount Vernon and Wamac.
During the investigation, two search warrants were served, three homes searched, one vehicle searched and numerous people interviewed.
The investigation led to the recovery of property from the robberies and items believed to be used during the robberies.
Haynes was further charged with three counts of armed robbery.
All three suspects face charges in connection with the two armed robberies of Times Square Liquors North (900 ½ Salem Road) and Jumpin Jimmies Convenience Store (3200 Broadway).
This is an on-going investigation between the Mount Vernon Police Department, Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, Wamac Police Department, Illinois State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
