CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - Longtime Cape Girardeau County Sheriff John Jordan said the key to working with the public is to gain their trust.
That's the mindset he's taking into his bid for another term as the top law man in Cape County.
"Once you gain their confidence, you will gain their cooperation and be an effective force within your community," Jordan said. "You must also engage in the fight against crime and lawlessness or those elements will rule the day."
Jordan admits, he thought about making this term his last, but the events that unfolded in Ferguson, Missouri changed his mind.
"The Department of Justice under the current administration basically forced law enforcement in Ferguson to follow a policy of 'non-engagement,'" Jordan said. "After the complete failure of that policy, chaos ensued and the only way to save face was to demonize law enforcement."
Jordan has spent 34 years in law enforcement, with 21 years as sheriff.
