MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) -

There is a scam going around on Facebook that has already cost a local woman $500 and deputies in McCracken County want to make sure you do not fall for it, too.

The victim told investigators that she had accepted a friend request from a man named ‘Charles Smith Mountjoy.’

The victim said she spoke to another friend about Mountjoy, not knowing that the person behind the Mountjoy profile had somehow gotten access to her friend’s profile and was talking to her through both accounts.

Mountjoy told the victim that for a cost of $500, she would get $100,000 from the U.S. government and asked the victim for personal information like her driver’s license, date of birth, facebook password, and phone number.

The victim actually sent the scammer the money and her personal information.

We have told you about this scam before as it has made its way around around the country.

Investigators say you should always use caution when giving out your personal information over the phone or through email.

And they say it is important for all of us to remember that if it sounds too good to be true, it is too good to be true.
