MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

The Mississippi County Sheriff is warning people about an IRS scam making its way around.

According to the sheriff, the scammers call from a (202) area code and claim the person owes tax money.

The caller allegedly threatens the recipient’s bank accounts or send officers to arrest them unless they agree to wire money or make a credit card payment over the phone.

It is important to note that the Internal Revenue Service will never request immediate payment nor ask for credit or debit card information over the phone.

Instead, the IRS will initiate contact with you via the U.S. postal service.

If you get a call like this one, you should hang up.
