CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Demolition of the Drury Lodge in Cape Girardeau, Missouri began on Monday, January 11.
The demolition will make space for a new 29,000 square foot facility.
City leaders said building an eight-story, multi-million dollar hotel serves an immediate need in the community.
City Manger Scott Meyer said it will provide extra business for competitive hotels.
"To have competitors come together and say, 'We will be part of this new venture,' it really speaks to the overall attractiveness of the project," Meyer said. "That says a whole lot."
The $11 million project will serve people visiting Cape Girardeau for sports tournaments, medical stays, homecomings and graduations.
In the long term, leaders in Cape Girardeau hope the impact will reach far beyond the front doors, with 80 new jobs and future developments.
