(KFVS) -

NASA recently released before and after images showing the flooded Mississippi River from space.

The before image was taken on Jan. 10, 2015 and the after on Jan. 3, 2016. Both were taken by the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer on NASA's Terra satellite.

Floodwaters appear blue, vegetation is green and bare ground is brown.

Heavy rains began in Missouri and Illinois in December 2015, but the effects are lasting well into the new year.
