ALEXANDER COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The Cape Girardeau Red Cross will be in Olive Branch, Illinois on Friday, January 8 to give out free cleaning supplies.
"We're helping people by passing out cleaning kits, shovels, bleach, trash bags, and also water and snacks and gloves," Ann Click with the American Red Cross said. "We're helping them with the clean up process."
"There will be a lot of people here. They've helped me out before, they've helped me out a lot," Olive Branch resident, Neal McCormick said.
Illinois state Rep.Brandon Phelps (D-Harrisburg), Ameren Illinois , and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources were also there for a supply drive, handing out cleaning supplies at the Alexander County Highway Department to displaced families.
"These people went through this before and I hate that they're going through this again," Rep. Phelps said. "I know what happened last time, they ran out of cleaning supplies. So we had interest throughout the whole state wanting to help out, so this is just the first start of it."
Mary Blakemore, an Alexander county resident, says the help she and her family has been getting goes a long way.
"It means a lot, we don't have to go and buy it for one thing," she said. "It's really good people come together in times like this, it really is."
According to Alexander County Chairman Chalen Tatum, the Red Cross will be at the Horseshoe Lake Chamber of Commerce in Olive Branch, beginning at 10 a.m.
They handed free cleaning supplies to people whose homes were damaged by floodwaters.
For anyone who is interested in donating cleaning supplies, you can donate your items at the Alexander Co. Highway Department or the Horseshoe Lake Chamber of Commerce.
