CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Cape Girardeau Firefighters will be using the Drury Lodge demolition site Thursday as a rare opportunity to practice building collapse rescues.

"It's an opportunity for us to get to do some stuff that we don't get to do on a day to day basis, as far as training," Battalion Chief for the Cape Girardeau Fire Department Brad Dillow said.

Firefighters and emergency crews from Sikeston and Jackson and possibly other areas will join Cape Girardeau starting at 9:00 a.m. for the all-day training session.

"If we were to have a structural collapse and everybody in our area thinks of earthquakes scenario," Dillow said. "So, if we were to have an earthquake, we would have a lot of structures that would collapse in our area."

A couple years ago, Dillow said the department had several opportunities for training before the building of the Isle Casino Cape Girardeau because of buildings that were there before it.

Now, Dillow said the variance in real training depends on what's available.

"Sometimes, we get some houses in the city that people are tearing down, and we're fortunate enough to get that to train in," Dillow said.

He said in 2015, the fire department really didn't get much of an opportunity.

"If there's more people out there who are wanting to getting rid of their houses or they're going to tear them down the more we can get to practice on the better," Master Firefighter JoJo Stuart said. "Anytime we can get a commercial structure like this it's really advantageous for us to practice and the more you practice the better you get."
