Our countdown of Heartland football stars has reached number 6.

Sikeston native James Wilder enjoyed an outstanding career as a running back at Missouri, and then in the NFL where he was picked in the second round in 1981 by Tampa Bay.

Wilder played in the Pro Bowl and was also named an All-Pro in 1984.

His career rushing yards topped 6,000 and he scored 37 touchdowns.

Wilder also played with the Redskins and Lions.
