Niece of shooter in KY trooper death sentenced to 5 years probation

LYON COUNTY, KY (KFVS) -

The niece of a man who allegedly shot and killed a Kentucky State trooper in September was sentenced to five years of probation.

Ambrea Shanks was sentenced in court on Monday, March 7.

She pleaded guilty on Monday, January 4.

According to the Lyon County Circuit Clerk's Office, Ambrea Shanks pleaded guilty to a charge of hindering prosecution.

Shanks is the niece of Joseph Thomas Johnson-Shanks.

Ponder had pulled a vehicle over for speeding on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015. Johnson-Shanks, Ambrea Shanks and three other passengers were inside the car. After a police chase, Ponder was shot and later died from his injuries.

Johnson-Shanks was the driver of the vehicle and the suspected shooter.
